Arr! Listen ye landlubbers! Word be goin' round that them scurvy New York Mets be makin' a deal with that fine pitcher Luis Severino! Aye, he be a true Yankee at heart, but now he'll set sail for new horizons!
Two-time MLB All-Star Luis Severino is reportedly set to join the New York Mets, the crosstown rival of his former team, the New York Yankees. According to multiple reports, Severino and the Mets are finalizing a 1-year, $13 million deal. The 29-year-old Dominican righty is looking for a fresh start after a tough 2023 season with the Yankees, where he pitched in 19 games and recorded a 6.65 ERA with 79 strikeouts. However, Severino has been plagued by injuries since 2020. In February 2020, he was placed on the injury list with a torn ulnar collateral ligament that required Tommy John surgery, causing him to miss the shortened season due to the coronavirus pandemic. In June 2021, Severino suffered a groin injury during a rehab start and experienced another setback two months later. He finally returned in September 2021, making four appearances. In 2022, Severino appeared to be back in form with a 3.18 ERA and 112 strikeouts in 19 games. However, his struggles returned in 2023, leading to a placement on the IL in September with an oblique strain. Once the deal with the Mets is official, Severino will join a rotation that is projected to include Kodai Senga, Jose Quintana, Tylor Megill, and Joey Lucchesi. The Mets are also reportedly targeting Japanese sensation Yoshinobu Yamamoto.
